Niseko Gravel Riding 1,200km of Routes in Hokkaido

1,200km of gravel under Yotei

Over 1,200km of gravel roads spread across the Niseko area. Hokkaido has the highest density of unpaved roads in Japan, and Niseko, at the base of Mount Yotei, is one of the best places to ride them.

The riding

The roads split into two types. Agricultural roads (nogyo-do) are flat and fast, connecting potato and rice farmland. Forest roads (rindo) climb into the hills with rougher surfaces and bigger payoffs. Combine the two and you can build anything from a 20km easy loop to an 80km+ full-day adventure.

Roads are quiet, scenery is Hokkaido at its volcanic best: farmland, forests, rivers, and the cone of Yotei never far from view.

Niseko Gravel events

The annual Niseko Gravel ride takes place each autumn, leading riders across the best of the area's gravel. See the events page for upcoming dates.

Before you go

A gravel bike with 35mm+ tyres is ideal, but a mountain bike or cyclocross bike works on most routes. Routes aren't signposted, so carry a GPS or phone with offline maps. Best season is May to October, with spring and autumn the standout months.
